but i don't even believe in jeebus.

this morning indra asked me what i am giving up for lent. ummmm... excuse me... not only am i not catholic, but jesus isn't even my personal savior.

can someone explain to me what lent is about anyway? what is giving up beer or chocolate for a few weeks really going to do for you except for maybe help you shed some junk from your trunk? is it supposed to cleanse your sins? if you're catholic, can't you just go to confession and have your sins forgiven anyway? where's the need in sacrificing anything? man, if i were catholic, i'd sin all over the place and then confess it up. no skin off my teeth there.

i hate organized religion.

anyway, i told indra i was giving up diet coke for lent. that lasted about 5 hours. please don't tell god.

I believe in Jeebus, but I'm not Catholic, and I don't really have a good grasp on lent either. I can speculate, though. I think giving up something for lent is kind of like giving somebody a flower. Flowers are completely useless, but it's the thought that counts. A flower is just a symbolic gesture the represents your care, love, or whatever to the other person. Being a Christian, for some people, has required making personal sacrifices, but for most of us, it doesn't. Lent gives people an opportunity to make unnecessary sacrifices as a symbolic way of expressing the same sort of thing--a willingness to sacrifice--in order to express one's adoration for Jeebus. That's why I say it's kind of like giving somebody a flower.

Of course I'm just speculating. You should ask a Catholic.
